Factory reset
From Halon Security
A new appliance is factory reset, running on a default configuration. In order to reset a forgotten password or resolve problems caused by configuration, an appliance can be manually reset using the recovery console.
There are two ways of doing this. If you have forgotten the password, you probably like to use a default configuration, but keep the old configuration revisions, in order to use the old configuration. This is called "recovery mode". Contrary, if you like to erase all configuration and data ever stored on the appliance, you can perform a true "factory reset". It implements a 3 pass disk erase (US DoD 5220.22M). If one require a higher level of privacy, the disk should be replaced.
Recovery mode
In recovery mode, a new, but empty, configuration revision will be added. Running on an empty configuration equals to running on the default configuration. All the old configuration revisions are untouched. This is ideal if one has forgotten the password, and also forgotten to export the configuration to an external location.
- Boot into the recovery console
- Choose Recovery Mode, and confirm.
- Reboot (to normal operation)
To use the previous (probably working) configuration, but with the new password;
- Connect to the applaince using the default configuration IP address
- Log in using the default configuration username and password.
- Go to the Management → Configuration
- Select the previous configuration and export it
- Copy the configuration into a text editor, and remove the config_user__1 entry
- Import the altered configuration
Factory reset
Unlike the recovery mode mentioned above, a factory reset will erase all configuration on the appliance, leaving only the default configuration.
- Boot into the recovery console
- Choose Factory Reset, and confirm.
- Reboot (to normal operation)
