Factory reset

A new unit is factory reset, running on a default configuration. In order to reset a forgotten password or resolve problems caused by configuration, a unit can be manually reset over the RS-232 serial console interface.

There are two ways of doing this. If you have forgotten the password, you probably like to use a default configuration, but keep the old configuration revisions, in order to use the old configuration. This is called "recovery mode". Contrary, if you like to erase all configuration and data ever stored on the appliance, you can perform a true "factory reset". It implements a 3 pass disk erase (US DoD 5220.22M), if you require a higher level of privacy you should erase it externally or replace the disk.

Recovery Mode

In recovery mode, a new, but empty, configuration revision will be added. All the old configuration revisions are untouched. This is ideal if one has forgotten the password, and also forgotten to export the configuration to an external location.

  1. Boot into the recovery console
  2. Choose Recovery Mode, and confirm.
  3. Reboot (to normal operation)

To use the previous (probably working) configuration, but with the new password;

  1. Connect to the unit using the default configuration IP address
  2. Log in using the default configuration username and password.
  3. Go to the Management → Configuration
  4. Select the previous configuration and export it
  5. Copy the configuration into a text editor, and remove the config_user__1 entry
  6. Import the altered configuration

Factory Reset

Unlike the recovery mode mentioned above, a factory reset will erase all configuration on the appliance, leaving only the default configuration.

  1. Boot into the recovery console
  2. Choose Factory Reset, and confirm.
  3. Reboot (to normal operation)
